On Residency

You should have seen the class as we were walking from lecture today down to lab. We looked like we were all walking to our doom. We are working on a particularity tedious task right now, the brachial plexus. I know that I'm not the only one who is freaking out a little bit about it. I'll learn it today and then I'll feel better tomorrow when I see it for real. The atlas that I have is wonderful, but it is different in the lab.

We had a display today on the spine. Med students of the past spent way too much time messing it up so they just decided to make our lives easier and do it for us. They cut off the top half of the bones exposing the cord and the surrounding menegies (dura, arachnoid, and pia). The cord is really quite amazing. Once you are born, your cord stops growing. As an adult, there is a region inside the vert's that have lots of nerve but no cord. The reason that a spinal tap can be done, and the reason for the location in the lower lumbars, is that there is no cord to accidentally poke. The nerve fibers that are present simply move out of the way. Think about putting a knife into a plate of spaghetti. You wouldn't hit a noodle.

I thought I may have a hard time getting back into studying. I was wrong. The cool thing is that the more time I spend studying, the less time I need to spend on any one thing. I'm remembering things faster than I thought I would be able to remember. I still spend a lot of time studying and I will continue to do so, but I'm not feeling generally overwhelmed. Overwhelmed at certain times, yes, but I'm really not that stressed. I'm having to live by the motto of why put off for tomorrow what you can do today. I can't learn everything from one day by the end of the day, but I learn some from all the days each days, so it's not like I'm getting days behind.

I'm talking like I've been here for a while. We all find it hard to believe that we've only been here for three days. It feels like much longer. Two days until the weekend, ten days until the first test. There is a lot of information to be learned between now and then.

Time for lunch and then on to studying.

Read the next post too. It's from this morning.
