today's phrase is...
hiatal hernia
A type of hernia that occurs when a portion of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm (where the oesophagus normally passes through). Obesity and smoking are considered risk factors. Hiatal hernia is often associated with reflux oesophagitis.

Except we had both stomach - almost the entier thing - and transverse colon up there. the diaphragm was so thin that we thought it was a lining and not a muscle. it probably didn't hurt but it could have given her problems with breathing while running up stairs or something like that. it can also cause GI issues.
we discovered that she had a hysterectomy. ovaries and tubes were there but they went nowhere.
it was one of the more smelly labs today. when one dies, bile leaks out of the gall bladder and into the abdomnial cavity. the result is a green stain on things like intestine. the gall bladder is easily identifyable in a cadaver. it is the only thing that is green. algae green.
her liver was badly cirrhossed (i don't know if that is even a word). it felt like hard plastic and was covered with hard bumps. it was slightly unreal.
i am going to my preceptor in a little under an hour. lab was short today so i had time to take a shower and rid myself of the smell of formalin and old bile. i'm sure i'll do another entry today once i return.
