On Residency

Saturday, August 28, 2004

I am soooooo tired on this Saturday afternoon. Chris, my living anatomy partner and one of my friends here, and I went to school at 8:00 this morning and spent 4 hours in the lab. We worked in the lab for about three hours and then we moved over to another room and looked at bones with another girl. We have to know lots of parts of the bones, but they are mostly easy and the names usually make sense - head, neck, etc.

One of my lab partners has pretty much taken over the left side of the cadaver. He is 22 an thinks he knows it all. He played fullback for Nebraska and he wants to be a surgeon. I have been annoyed at this situation because that leaves the other four of us to the right side. There's not enough to do and somebody, sometimes two people, get left standing around without much to do. I was under the impression that his dissections were really good and I was feeling a little annoyed at the situation. Until today. There was a tutor there, I think she is a medical student or a PhD student, who said that the left upper limb was a mess and there had been a lot of things sacrificed for the sake of others. I have decided the way to deal with my slight animosity towards said lab partner is to just ignore him and do what I can on the other side, which won't be completely screwed up.

I don't learn very well in the lab because I am thinking of the task at hand - finding certain structures. I have a photographic anatomy atlas which I think is a good source for studying. It shows different views and shows the relationships of things in proper anatomy. I can see what the structures look like in a properly dissected specimen and the coloration is true to the lab, unlike in the other atlas that I have that has drawings and lots of color.

The other part of this first core is embryology. We've been told that the notes are sufficient but when we are looking at the learning objectives, there seems to be a lot of information missing. Information missing that isn't in the book either.

I can't figure out what to do for the rest of the day. I need a nap badly and I should eat. I also have a ton to study. I have decide that I am going to spend more time at school nest week than I did this week. I think I will get more done there since there are fewer distractions. I hope my carpool agrees.
